Podcast #9: Biology, Identity, And Politics—A Conversation On Sex And Gender With Sneha Chaturvedi

Podcast #9: Biology, Identity, And Politics—A Conversation On Sex And Gender With Sneha Chaturvedi

Many politicians including the President of the United States use the terms “sex” and “gender” interchangeably as in there are two sexes and two genders. This is patently false.

To get to the bottom of what is scientific fact and what is social bias, we enlisted the help of Sneha Chaturvedi, an MD-PhD student at Washington University in St. Louis. Her research involves sex variation in neurodevelopment and she is also a clinician interested in improving healthcare to underserved populations.

In this podcast we cover the scientific definitions of sex and gender. One is a biologic construct, while the other is a social one. We discuss whether there are or are not only two sexes, only two genders, and what determines any individual’s sex or gender. Of course, we define what transgender means, how a transgender child might present clinically, and what options doctors have in clarifying gender identity in a young person questioning his or her gender.

We also address the issue of transwomen in cis-women’s sports and whether or not they really have a leg up on their XX chromosome competition. Finally, we do discuss the role that an enlightened government might play in educating the public about sex and gender and depoliticizing and destigmatizing people for political purposes.
